Artwork is not simply used to decorate your home, many times, it holds memories that can transport you back to a particular time and place in your life. Precious artwork and framed family memories captured at the perfect moment can be large, awkward, and unwieldy to pack. These items need to be specially protected when they are being packed for either moving or storage. When unpacking these fragile items, you don’t want to find shattered glass, chipped frames, or punctured canvases. We have gathered the best tips to protect these items from unwanted damage.
> Prepare the glass layer of your artwork by creating an ‘X’ across the glass using painter’s tape. This will help keep the glass from shattering everywhere in the unlikely event that it does break. Be sure to use painter’s tape as it can be easily removed from glass without leaving a film across the surface.
> Wrap the entire piece in two or more sheets of packing paper, taking care to tape all of the loose ends. Then add a layer of bubble wrap for additional padding and security. Secure with packing tape.
> If you want additional protection for the corners of your frames, purchase specialized cardboard corner protectors or tape extra bubble wrap onto the corners.
> Small- and medium-sized artwork can now be grouped and packed together. Stack wrapped items vertically in the smallest box that will hold them and do not lay them flat. Fill extra space with more paper to prevent shifting. Packing peanuts can also be used for filling gaps in the box. As a bonus, packing peanuts can absorb some humidity which will protect your artwork during storage.
> Frame boxes and large picture boxes are ideal for large prints, paintings, and mirrors. Each of these heavy-duty frame boxes should handle two or three items. Unfolded picture boxes can be used for all different-sized pictures. You can piece them together using just two portions, or you can telescope the pieces together to protect the largest of your hanging art.
> Label all sides of the box with the word FRAGILE. This is a helpful reminder for everyone who touches the box on its journey to contain priceless artwork. Also, be sure to indicate on the box which side should be up. Keep the packed artwork on its side, not flat. The frame will absorb pressure easier on an edge than when flat.
