Tips for Packing Up Your Bedroom

Updated on June 21, 2024

Packing your home for an upcoming move can be daunting. Each room in your home can be approached differently based on the items inside of it. For this blog, we will focus on some tips you can use when packing your bedroom for an upcoming move. From your clothes to your bed, our tips will help make cleaning and the packing process for your bedroom easier.

Bedroom Packing Tips

Your bedroom is one of the most important rooms to pack up. It is your sanctuary, your personal space, and the last thing you want is for your stuff to be in all the wrong places or packed incorrectly. Avoid frustration and annoyance on your first night in your new home and beyond by packing for your move in the simplest way possible!

Plan out your bedroom pack out

Depending on how you like to pack (harder rooms first or easier rooms first), choose which bedrooms you want to tackle first. If you have kids, this could mean getting theirs done last so that they have as much normalcy as possible. Or if it is just you and a spouse and you have some guestrooms with minimal amounts of furniture to move, that might be a good first start. Either way, it is good to have a plan of action before you begin to actually pack and know which rooms you will take care of first.

Pack yourself a bag with the essentials

Once you have a plan, pack a bag of essentials that can be used for 2-3 days before you start the bedroom packing process. This “go-bag” will be extremely helpful the first few days you move into your new home. It should have an outfit or two, toiletries, deodorant, etc. - anything that you might need to freshen up. Unloading all of your stuff and situating it the way you want it in your home might take a few days. This ensures you have everything you need and that you aren’t opening boxes all over the house looking for a shirt.

Have your packing materials ready

Have any moving boxes, packing tape, furniture blankets, mattress bags and protectors, etc., ready to go before you start to make your move. If you have any duffel bags, backpacks, or travel luggage, use them first to pack some items and save a little extra space. Moving and packing supplies can be purchased from home improvement stores like Lowe’s or can be stuff you already have in your home. Old towels and bedsheets can be very valuable moving supplies that can keep your stuff safe from damage during the move - always keep these items handy in case you need them!

Use the opportunity to clear some clutter

Moving can be a two-fold experience of moving your needed belongings into a new home while discovering things you don’t remember having or need anymore. If you come across some clothes that perhaps don’t fit anymore or toys your children don’t play with, consider donating or just throwing them out. You don’t need to make the moving process harder on yourself by taking unneeded items with you. If it is something that is still in a small box in your closet that you haven’t unpacked since your last move, you probably don’t need it anymore!

Begin with the fragile items

Begin packing your fragile bedroom items first. This way, you can get this out of the way early and not have to worry about damaging them when moving bulkier items such as mattresses and dressers later on. Don’t forget to denote the box or whatever you use to carry such items as fragile, and use plenty of packing paper to secure your fragile items in the box!

Packing clothes

Packing your clothing can be done in multiple ways, depending on how you are moving your belongings and your preference for how your items will look when you get to your new home. You can remove all clothing from hangers and pack them into wardrobe boxes or suitcases, or you can keep your clothing on the hangers and simply transport it that way. The strategy will ultimately depend on the amount of space you have and how you want to move them.

Packing mattresses

The suggestion is to always pack your mattress first since it can take up the most space. Be sure to have a study mattress protector to keep moisture and dirt from getting onto it during your move. If you are using a 1-800-PACK-RAT container to move, pack your mattress first by standing it up so it is flush with the wall - learn more about how to properly pack your container if you want more tips. Not only will this get your mattress out of the way and into an easy-to-access spot, but it can double as padding for any other items, such as bedroom furniture or boxes from shifting. Getting your mattress packed first will give you the rest of the space you need to move your bedroom items.

Packing pillows and blankets

You can use your pillows and blankets to fill empty spaces in your container or truck as you go. Simply bag the pillows and blankets and use them as needed.

Packing jewelry

Keep any expensive jewelry either on you or in your personal go-bag. Never pack it with your everyday bedroom belongings or in a random box. The same goes for any important documents you might be keeping in your bedroom.

Packing toiletries

Be sure to pack what you will need for yourself for a few days, then collect and pack everything else. Do not pack aerosol sprays! If you do, they should be with you in your car in a ventilated place, as extreme temperatures (hot or cold) can cause the contents inside to expand and potentially rupture the can.

Packing furniture and electronics

Empty out your dresser’s drawers and transport them separately if you can. If not, be sure that the drawers are facing the wall of your container or moving truck so that they do not shift and come out. If you have a TV in one of your bedrooms, try covering it with a furniture blanket and pack it somewhere where contents won’t fall or shift onto it (this is where the blankets and pillows can come in handy. Also, be sure to spread the weight of these heavy items out equally in your moving vessel of choice. Do not overload one side of your container or truck!
