4 Common Moving Mistakes You Should Try to Avoid

Even when moving goes perfectly, it can still be a stressful job. If things start to go wrong, a stressful situation can snowball into a nightmare experience. But with preparation and research, you can have a smooth, stress-free moving experience. You don’t have to make mistakes to learn from them. You can learn from others' mistakes!

Take a look at some of the most common moving mistakes we have seen:

1. Forgetting to change your address

Many people forget to change their address in advance and this can cause big problems. It is recommended that you change your address 4-5 weeks before your move so that it has time to process. You will also want to notify your bank if you are keeping your account, utility companies, and other important institutions of your new address.

2. Forgetting to get an estimate

Without accurate moving company estimates, you may find that you did not save or budget enough money for your move. For the best quote, you will want to reserve your move in advance. This will also give you plenty of time to plan and put aside the money you need to use for the move.

3. Poor packing

We get it, we really do. Packing is no fun! People tend to procrastinate when it comes to packing up their home and then do a quick and poor job of it at the last minute. This can cause a lot of heartbreak when you arrive at your new home and find broken items. Go the extra mile and take the time it takes to carefully pack your belongings, or you can always hire professional packers to do the job for you.

4. Forgetting Fido

Our pets are part of our families, but we have seen many people realize on moving day that they did not think about how to transport their pets, or even make sure they had called the vet to let them know they are moving, pick up any needed meds, or arrange for medical documents to be faxed to a new vet. When you are making your moving checklist, make sure you add a reminder to call the vet and arrange for proper transport.
