Whether you are moving across the country or relocating next door, moving during the holidays can quickly turn you into a Grinch. While some may welcome the time off from work to accomplish this feat, others may view the timing as a challenge and not something they want on their holiday to-do list. No matter which camp you fall into, here are six tips to help ensure a “merry move” during the holidays.
1. Timing & Weather
While the holidays aren’t considered a “peak moving season,” scheduling can be more hectic. Plan ahead and book a moving company as early as possible. Keep in mind that movers also have holiday commitments. If you are planning a DIY move, consider weather and traffic hazards. Be sure to check the forecast before traveling and have an emergency kit on hand in the event of an emergency.
2. Budget
Budgets are typically tighter during the holidays. Adding a move to the budget can add up quickly. Consider a mid-week move versus the weekend and research moving company holiday discounts. Consider cost-efficient alternatives such as portable storage containers and rental trucks. Save on supplies by using boxes found at beverage stores and using linens and towels as a protective wrap for fragile items.
3. Important Updates
Before the move, be sure to take care of a few tasks that are sometimes forgotten such updating car insurance and changing your address on important documents.
4. Safety
Home invasions increase during the holiday season. If possible, consider setting up a security system before or right after moving into your new home.
5. Holiday Decorations
In addition to packing essential items to be unloaded first (i.e. linens, toiletry items, paper plates/cups/napkins, etc.), pack a box of a few holiday decorations. Unpack these items first and spread a little holiday cheer into your new home!
