Although some items may be more challenging to pack, like large appliances, know that even these unusual items can easily be packed and moved if you follow the right procedures and put safety first. Use our guide to help you learn the proper way to move equipment and appliances, and you can move these items just like the professionals!
Part 1: Tips for Smaller Equipment & Appliances
Drain Lawn Equipment
Drain lawn equipment and tools of gas and oil before packing them up, as these contents are flammable.
Unplug Your Refrigerator
Make sure to unplug your refrigerator and defrost the freezer well in advance of moving day.
Run a Clean Rinse Cycle
Run a clean rinse cycle for your washer to remove any detergent residue left in the washer. Also, remove any lint left in the dryer. After your cycles are complete, shut off cold and hot water valves from the wall, and place wiring, hoses and removable parts within the appliances.
Be Sure to Clean Stove
Remove any items stored in your stove and set the oven to complete a self-clean cycle. Be prepared for this to take several hours. Gas stoves will require the gas to be professionally shut off, and the piping disengaged. Electronic stoves will just need to be unplugged before moving. Tape the knobs on the stoves to prevent them from becoming loose during transit.
Pack Microwave in Original Box
To thoroughly clean your microwave, remove the glass turntable and once complete, pack the microwave in its original box if you still have it.
Part 2: Preparing Your Grill
Dispose of Unused Charcoal
Dispose of unused charcoal and remove the tank from the grill before packing.
Detach Removable Items
Detach any removable items from the grill to minimize possible movement during transit.
Part 3: Packing Your Tools
Pack Loose Hand Tools
Pack loose hand tools into small containers that can support a heavy weight.
Wrap Valuables Individually
Wrap any tools that you deem valuable in individual rags and towels to maintain their condition.
Properly Cover Sharp Edges
Ensure that tools and equipment with sharp edges and blades have the proper covering.
