How to Prepare Moving Supplies

A collection of boxes sits on the floor and stacked on top of each other with a rug and houseplants sitting in the background inside a home

Whether you have a local or long-distance move coming up, you will need to gather and prepare moving supplies. With the proper materials, you will have no problems getting your valuable belongings safely to your new home. We have compiled a handy guide to walk you through the necessary moving supplies for a successful move—take a look!

Essential Packing Supplies for A Smooth Move

It is never too early to start collecting moving supplies - the earlier, the better!

Boxes Of Various Sizes

You will need various-sized boxes to pack your things adequately. You will likely use small and medium boxes for most things, but you will need extensive and extra-large containers for oversized, lightweight items like cushions, stuffed animals, or pillows. You can also get wardrobe boxes, kitchen dish boxes, TV and framed picture boxes, or even boxes for your appliances.

Heavy-Duty Tape

Heavy-duty tape will ensure your boxes are properly and tightly sealed. Not only will this make the boxes structurally sound for stacking and moving, but it will help keep pests out of your things. Place one line of tape going down the box's flaps to close your box, taping the two flaps together. Then, place two or three additional tape strips in the opposite direction.

*Bonus Tip: Use different tape colors to represent the other rooms in your home. Doing this will show you where each box is headed when you get to your new home.

Permanent Markers for Box Labeling

You will need thick, permanent markers to label each box. You can use various colors if you can read the labels. Take some extra time when packing to make a quick inventory list on the outside of the box so you will know what each box contains. This step will save you time and frustration when you reach your new home and are looking for specific items.

Protective Supplies for Your Fragile Items

When packing and moving your fragile items, you must take extra precautions to ensure their safety.

Use Bubble Wrap to Secure Your Stuff

Bubble wrap is an affordable and reliable option to protect your fragile items. It would be best to have a few rolls of this on hand. Wrap your fragile items individually and tape the wrap together so it doesn't fall off during transit.

Use Loose Cardboard as a Cushion

Don't underestimate the power of cardboard! It can be used in almost every room of your home. Pieces of cardboard between your dinner plates can add stability and protection. Or use cardboard cut to size in between your framed pictures to prevent scratches on the acrylic or glass.

Blankets of Protection

Moving blankets are invaluable for protecting larger items like upholstered furniture and appliances. They can also be used to move things like bookshelves or dressers. Place the blanket under each leg or corner so you can easily glide the piece of furniture where it needs to go without damaging your flooring.

Equipment For Easy Moving

Having the right equipment can make the moving process smoother and more efficient.

Use a Back Brace

Prioritizing your safety and well-being during your move is paramount. If you are not using a third-party moving company, you should take extra precautions while moving heavy items yourself. A back brace will give you added support, relieve pressure on your back, and reduce the risk of injury. Remember to use proper lifting techniques!

Hand Carts and Dollies

We always say to work smarter, not harder! If you don't have a hand cart or dolly to move heavy and oversized items, you can rent one for a small fee from your local home improvement retailer. Your back will thank you. You can use a hand cart to quickly move things like refrigerators, stacks of boxes, dressers, and more.

Have Your Tools Ready

Keep a toolbox with standard tools available for your moving day. Packing up all the tools and not having what you need for disassembling furniture is a common moving mistake. Screwdrivers, drills, pliers, scissors, and a hammer are just a few things you may need when moving out of the home.

*Bonus tip: when you disassemble a piece of furniture, place all the screws, nuts, and bolts in a plastic bag, label it, and use heavy-duty tape to secure it to the back so they do not get lost.
