We’ve all done it—made New Year’s Resolutions and didn’t quite follow through. It’s easy to make the list of things we want to change or accomplish in the new year, but let’s face it—it’s tough to break bad habits and change the way we go through our day-to-day lives. The good news is, though it is difficult to change, it’s not impossible. A few inspirational quotes come to mind:
“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” -George Bernard Shaw
“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: 'If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?' And whenever the answer has been 'No' for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” - Steve Jobs
“Things do not change; we change.” - Henry David Thoreau
“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” - Winston Churchill
Change is never easy, but the right changes are worth the work. Let’s take a look at a few ways you can stick with your 2015 New Year’s Resolutions. Next year at this time, you’ll find that your change has become your new normal!
1. Be accountable: Tell people what you plan to do in 2015. Choose friends and family that you know will ask about your progress and offer encouragement when you slip or start to get frustrated. With the right people in your corner, you can do anything!
2. Make a plan: It’s easy to say, “I want to get fit and healthy” or “I want my home to be completely organized”, but with such broad goals, it can be difficult to follow through. Break down your goals into a step-by-step plan. If you want to be healthier this year, create a plan on paper on how you intend to do that. Maybe you will start by walking once a week and cutting out certain problem foods.
3. Go easy on yourself: The point of New Year’s resolutions isn’t to impress anyone else or to be immediately different. Take your time. Work out your plan over the year. If you have decided to organize your home this year, this doesn’t mean that it has to be completely organized by the end of the January. Take your big goal and work it into manageable portions that you know you can accomplish. If you get behind, or you slip up on your plan, go easy on yourself. Remember, change is hard—you can only keep trying and working to meet the goals you have set for yourself. If you start to get discouraged through the year, take a look back at the smaller goals you have completed and keep moving toward your big goals.
