We are slowly but surely getting closer to the final moving date, and with little more than two weeks remaining, things are in crunch time. If you missed our other blog on what to do 45 days take a look at it! With two weeks left, you must now start planning your move day and packing more essential items. Be sure to have everything on this list done, as some things will be extremely time sensitive to complete!
Start mapping out your journey: Whether you are utilizing professional movers, portable containers, or making the move yourself, you will need to start planning how you will be getting to your new home yourself. This means deciding what vehicle (if you are driving) you will pack everyone into and make sure it is ready to make the trip. Get your route mapped out as well, and plan out any stops you might need to make ahead of time. If you are flying out, do not delay any longer in getting plane tickets if you haven’t already!
Keep your moving receipts organized: This will not only keep your financial info safe and accounted for, but you can even use and claim it as a deduction on your taxes in the next year.
Begin the central part of the packing process: Now is the time to begin packing more of your belongings up, leaving just enough to survive the next two weeks. This includes any clothes or outfits you are not going to wear, and kitchenware you are not going to use, electronics, etc. Pack these now so that you only have to move and coordinate the next week.
Secure your valuables: If you have any jewelry or precious heirlooms in safety deposit boxes or secured elsewhere, consider taking them out now. You can find a secure place to keep them while you are packing, and then personally move them yourself. Don’t allow them to get mixed in with other items, and only handle them yourself to avoid any issues.
Clean as you pack: Even if you aren’t moving out of an apartment or rented space, it is a good idea and proper etiquette to leave the place as clean as you would want to find it. Once you clear a room, do a once over and clean it up. This will save time and reduce stress on the days right before your move if the cleaning up part is at a minimum.
Recycle hazardous items now: Almost all moving companies prohibit the moving of objects like propane tanks and other pressured containers/toxic and caustic items. Locate the nearest hazardous disposal facility near you and dispose of these items now. Some may have odd hours, so you might need to devote an afternoon to the task.
Get your automotive tasks in order: This goes beyond simple maintenance. This includes getting your car insurance set up for the new state you are moving to, as well as your car registration and license plate. Your drivers license will also need to be updated as well.
Ensure your insurance is ready: This includes your homeowners or renters insurance. Give your homeowners/renters insurer a call and transfer the insurance to your new home. Rates may change based on your new area, so be prepared for that!
Fill prescriptions and find a new pharmacy if needed: If you are on any prescription medicine, now is the time to fill them to ensure you have all you need for your move. Look into finding a new pharmacy in your new city as well to avoid issues with filling them once you move in.
