A week out from the big day! In our last blog in our long-distance moving series, we focused on some tasks that can get lost in the packing hustle and bustle two weeks out. This time, we focus on some key items that need to be addressed before you wake up on the day of your move. If you haven’t already, check out our blogs on what to do 45 days and 15 days out!
Pack everything: Now is the time to start packing everything that hasn’t been packed yet. You are getting close enough to the final date where you shouldn’t have to leave anything but the bare essentials unpacked. Leave out some outfits, toiletries, and any other necessities you might need and pack the rest.
Follow up on that move date: Make sure you follow up a couple of times during your final week before the move. This ensures that nothing has changed, gives you peace of mind, and keeps the moving company honest. Confirm both the time and date of your move.
Cancel or redirect any deliveries that might happen: If you ordered something online or have some important mail coming in, be sure to cancel the delivery or contact the company sending your item to have it redirected. If it is really important, don’t count on the Postal Service’s change of address to make the change.
Begin the cleaning out process: This is probably more applicable for your kitchen. Begin the process of clearing out your cabinets, pantries and most importantly your fridge. This could become a messy project, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned in quite a while. Try working on this mini project 5-7 days out from your final move date. That should give you enough time to clean out and eat/throw away any food and disinfect or wash out the fridge itself.
Continue to plan: Map out what the move-out day will look like. Have a plan on when you need to wake up, and what kinds of to-dos will be on tap for the day. Have a contingency plan made in case your movers/container delivery are later or earlier than expected. While you don’t need to over plan for this, just be sure to have something to fall back on in case something goes wrong.
Monitor the weather: Keep track of the weather getting to the final date of your move, especially if it is during the summer. About three days out is a good timeframe for knowing what the weather will likely be. Have a contingency plan though, especially during the summer months, as pop-up storms and showers can happen on a whim.
Begin the touchups: This is especially important if you are in a rented home or apartment, but it doesn’t mean you should leave a sold home without touchups! Take a walkthrough of your home and note all of the holes in the wall or scuffs on the wall that need to be fixed and cleaned up. There are a lot of different DIY ways to clean up so that you can get your security deposit or just leave a clean home for the next tenant! Take some photos as well in case you need to document your cleanup.
