4 Non-traditional Packing Tips for Moving

A woman packing clothes in a nontraditional way.

Packing for a long-distance move, or just figuring out how you would like to store your items, can prove to be a challenge. Being prepared can make a huge difference. Taking inventory, labeling boxes, protecting fragile items, etc. are great tips to help you get ahead of the packing game. However, here are four tips that aren’t very traditional, but can be quite useful when packing:

1. Roll Your Clothes

Most of us just fold or "stuff" our clothes into suitcases or moving boxes. Surprisingly if you roll your clothes instead, you can save space and fit more clothes into your moving box! Long term, this could save you money on extra boxes and packing materials!

2. Prioritize

More than likely if you are moving, you probably won't get a chance to unpack everything in one day. Keep this in mind when you are packing. Pack items that you might need right away, such as a coffee maker, linens, your toiletry items and underwear on top. You may want to label this box "Open First" to help remind you when you are buried under a sea of boxes which box you should open first.

3. Skip the Packing Supplies

Save some money and use your own towels, blankets and sheets to pack fragile items. You need to pack your linens up too so you might as well use them as packing supplies.

4. Nooks & Crannies

If you are packing odd shaped items such as a vase for example, you will probably have some empty spaces left in the box. Fill up these nooks & crannies with clothes or small fluffy toys to help protect the items and also save space. No empty space left behind!

As you embark on your moving or storage plans, keep these four tips in mind to help you save space, money and time! And whether you are moving cross-country or just loading up a moving storage container, please give 1-800-PACK-RAT a call today for storage solutions!
