Whether you are moving into a new apartment or home locally or across the country, it’s usually leaving the current apartment that can be a pain. Between notices, addresses, cleaning and deposits, it may feel overwhelming. You could be asking yourself:
How do I get my apartment deposit back?
What’s the best way to move my stuff?
How soon should I talk to utility companies?
How do I ensure I get a fair inspection?
Where do I put my stuff while I’m cleaning?
Apartments are super convenient, but they also have their own share of challenges. We asked our 1-800-PACK-RAT moving and storage experts for their best tips and hacks to help with moving out of your apartment.
Give plenty of notice: These seems like a no-brainer, but the 30-day notice continues to creep up. In some areas of the country, you may find 45 days or even 60 days. Review your lease or check in with the property manager to ensure nothing has changed.
Fix what you can: Deposits are easily whittled away by small things you can fix. Store as much of your stuff as you can so you can see walls, carpet, baseboards, and shelving. You might be surprised at small holes, nicks and other items that you can easily fix and, in the process, preserve some of that deposit.
Clean and then clean some more: Our moving and storage experts stressed this one! Don’t wait until only a couple of days before you are due to move out to start the cleaning process. Removing as much of your contents as possible to a portable storage unit a month ahead of time will ensure a more stress-free move. That gives you time and space to see what needs a good cleaning and to get it done!
Consider a pre-inspection: Sure, your apartment will receive the once-over after you leave or on the day of departure, but wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have any surprises? After cleaning up, removing clutter, storing some things and making repairs, consider asking for a pre-inspection or early walk-through so the manager can identify areas of concern that you then will have time to repair or clean.
Moving out of your apartment doesn’t have to be a whirlwind of stress. Planning ahead, storing some things so you are not surprised at what’s behind that bookshelf and working proactively with the property manager can ease your mind.
