Originally known as Armistice Day - which celebrated the end of WWI and the veterans who served in it - a man named Raymond Weeks, a Navy veteran of WWII and a Birmingham native, petitioned then General Dwight D. Eisenhower to expand the holiday of commemoration. Weeks would go on to celebrate the first Veterans Day parade in the United States later that year, and would continue to lobby the government itself for several more years for recognition of Veterans Day. On June 1, 1954, Congress finally passed a bill replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans."
