3. LeRoy Pope, the founder of Huntsville, originally named the city Twickenham when he initially purchased the land for the town and donated it in 1805. After the War of 1812, anti-British sentiment was high throughout the nation, and the town's name was changed to Huntsville to honor pioneer John Hunt.
