The song was originally a poem that was penned by Katharine Lee Bates in 1893. 2. Revolutionary inventor and scientist, Nikola Tesla once had an Experimental Station located in Colorado Springs in 1884. At the time, Tesla's reputation soured among the populace as his experiments often created power surges in the city, causing blackouts and other issues. That, combine with lack of payment to the landlord led to Tesla's facility being torn down in 1904. The exact location of the lab is debated to this day, with it being located approximately between The Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind and the Union Printers Home/Memorial Park.
3. The United States Olympic Training Center is located in Colorado Springs, and was the first center of its kind to be built in 1978. The site in Colorado Springs was originally chosen for the high elevation of the area, which was thought to improve training effectiveness and recovery.
