3. The city played host to the 1982 World's Fair and led to the creation of one of Knoxville's most iconic buildings. The Sunsphere is 26 stories tall, and each pane of glass at the top of the structure is made of 24-karat gold. Visitors can visit the structure's Observation Deck to get an amazing 360-degree view of the city. The 1982 World's Fair also saw Knoxville host an estimated 11 million visitors from the United States and around the world. The Sunsphere and the Tennessee Amphitheatre are the last remaining buildings from the fair that were specifically created for the event.
