A Personally Procured Move (or a Do It Yourself/DITY move) gives military members an alternative to the standard moving process. Military members can use their vehicles or hire out moving services. The government can then reimburse military members up to 100% of the Government Constructive Cost (GCC), or how much the government would normally spend on moving you to your new location.
Partial PPM moves or partial DITY moves allow you to transport a portion of your items, leaving the rest to the military movers to transport the rest of your household goods.
When planning your upcoming DITY move, make sure you have all of the documentation your specific military branch requires. Check with your base's Personal Property Officer (PPO) to get the information you need to ensure you can make your move with no issues - your base transportation office must approve your PPM move prior to your move, or your reimbursement may be delayed or even denied.
Once done, you can then decide how you will be making your move and then retain the services of a company like 1-800-PACK-RAT to help make your move simple! You can also elect to choose a partial DITY move, where you only ship a certain amount of your belongings rather than all of your stuff. Be sure to keep all of your receipts for anything you purchase, rent, etc., as this will help you get your reimbursement later on.
When your move is over, and you have submitted all of the paperwork and receipts gathered during the process, the government will reimburse you for the move based on how much it would cost them to move you. Once your move is complete, it is possible you can have money left over thanks to the reimbursement payout! Our 16-foot container is our most popular option, as it can typically hold 3-4 rooms worth of furniture, up to 6,000 lbs in weight, and 830 cubic feet of storage space. Each container is all-steel and weatherproof to keep your stuff safe, and our barn-style doors are easier to secure and open than the roll-up doors our competitors use. Your rank is used to determine your total weight allowance for your military move. Generally speaking, the higher your rank, the more weight the military will cover in your PCS move. Check your travel orders and talk to your base’s PPO to determine how much weight is included in your allowance.
Our 16-foot and 12-foot container options can hold up to 6,000 lbs each, while our 8-foot option holds 4,000 lbs. You can use the US Transportation Command’s weight estimator tool to help estimate how much your items weigh. If you need assistance with filling out your weight tickets, both before and after you pack your container, be sure to check in with your base's PPO to ensure the proper documentation is completed correctly.
