What does the container look like?

Our containers are all-steel, weatherproof, and lockable. They come in three sizes –  8-foot, 12-foot, and 16-foot. If you would like to see a container in person, you can visit your local Lowe's Home Improvement store as we are their exclusive Moving & Storage partner.

What if you do not have a facility near me?

Call us anyway! Even if you don’t see a facility location near you, we can still help you with your moving and storage needs. We can service 97% of the USA, so wherever you need to go, 1-800-PACK-RAT can get you there.

How much stuff can fit into one container?

An 8-foot container typically holds 1-1.5 rooms of household goods, a 12-foot container typically holds 2-3 rooms of household goods, and a 16-foot container typically holds 3-4 rooms of household goods. Visit our portable storage containers page for more information or check out our space calculator to determine what size or how many containers you'll need.

Where will you put the container and what clearance will you need?

We can generally put the container on any flat, weight-bearing surface that does not have obstructing tree limbs or power lines. For delivery, we will need 13.5 feet of height clearance free from obstruction, 12 feet of width clearance free from obstruction and a total length of approximately 55 feet of maneuverability for the driver to position the truck for off-loading. We can always view your area on Google Maps to determine any challenges although we do not often encounter difficulties. Please indicate if your driveway is steep beyond 6 degrees of inclination.

I don’t have a driveway. Do I need a permit to put a 1-800-PACK-RAT container in front of my house?

In most cases, you do not need a permit to have a storage container placed in front of your home. However, you should consult your city or town hall for the local regulations.

How long can I have the container at my house?

That is completely up to you! As soon as you load your container, call us and we can take it to one of our secure, temperature-controlled warehouses until you need it again.

Can I access my container while it is in storage?

Give us 24 - 48 hour notice and we’ll move your 1-800-PACK-RAT unit to one of our secure staging areas – well-lit, safe and car-accessible locations at our warehouse. Or for a nominal fee, we can deliver your portable storage container to you so you can get what you need or add more.

How can I change or cancel my order?

At 1-800-PACK-RAT, we understand that moving is a complicated process and sometimes plans can change. If you need to make changes to your account or cancel your order, just give us a call at 1-800-722-5728 and our customer service representatives can help! Please note that if you cancel your order within five days of the initial delivery, you may be subject to a cancellation fee.

How do you ensure the safety of my stuff?

You can rest assured that your belongings will be safe with us. Our all-steel, weather-resistant and lockable containers are manufactured specifically to keep your contents safe. They offer protection, security, and moisture resistance to prevent mold and mildew; something that wood and plastic containers simply cannot match. Our loading mechanism keeps your container level when being picked up and delivered for transport, which minimizes shifting and subsequent damage to your belongings. If you want the extra peace of mind, we offer a variety of Contents Protection Plans.


What if I need help with packing or loading/unloading services?

We can recommend trusted third-party moving companies who can help you pack, load and unload your contents. 

How much does it cost?

At 1-800-PACK-RAT, we have three major offerings - local moving serviceslong-distance moving services and temporary or long-term storage solutions. There are many variables that go into calculating our pricing, and we work very hard to stay competitive with our pricing to provide the best in the industry without compromising quality. To receive a local moving or storage quote, simply fill out your information in the quote form at the top of the page. Your quote will include your monthly rental cost, total due at delivery, and estimated future transportation costs.

Pricing for long-distance moving is a bit more complicated as the final cost depends on many factors, such as the distance between ZIP codes, the flexibility of your move dates, container availability and more. You can get an online quote to find out if you will need to speak to a 1-800-PACK-RAT moving specialist over the phone.

When do I pay for my services?

If you are doing a local move or storage, you will not be charged until your container is delivered to you. Upon delivery, you will be responsible for the container rental and the delivery fee plus applicable taxes and fees. Transportation and final container pick-up fees will be broken down and charged on a “pay as you go” basis. If you are using our storage services, storage fees will be charged on the monthly anniversary. 

If you are doing a long-distance move, you will not be charged until five days prior to your scheduled delivery of the empty container. At this time, a $500 deposit will be charged. That deposit will go towards the balance of your move cost. Prior to the transport of the container to the destination facility, the remaining balance is due. If you are still using our container for storage services, storage fees will be charged on the monthly anniversary of your initial delivery.

Can I pay with multiple credit cards?

Yes, you can provide the various charge information and how you want the total charge distributed between the credit cards.

How secure is my personal information?

We use state-of-the-art encryption methods to ensure the privacy of our customers. 

Can I manage my account online?

Yes, you can use My PackRat to manage your account. In My PackRat, you can schedule pick-ups and deliveries and update your information. Our local moving and storage customers can make payments, and we are working on making this function available to our long-distance customers as well.

What kind of contents protection do you offer?

We take pride in keeping your belongings safe and secure while they are in our care. Contents Protection Plans are available to customers who want that extra peace of mind or who don’t currently carry any form of coverage themselves. You can find more information about what is covered on our contents protection plan page.

When can I purchase a Contents Protection Plan?

If you would like to purchase a Contents Protection Plan, you can add this to you order prior to the initial container delivery. Unfortunately, you will not be able to add a Contents Protection Plan after the initial delivery of the container. 

How long does it take to deliver my empty container?

This can vary by date and location, but in most cases we can schedule the initial empty container delivery within 48 hours. When scheduling to have your packed container picked up or your packed container delivered to the final destination, we will do our best to work with your schedule. Log into your My PackRat account or call us at 1-800-722-5728 to find out if your preferred delivery date is available. 

How long does it take to move my packed container to my final destination

Local move transportation times depend on many factors including the season and your local market. We will do our best to deliver your container at your convenience. Long-distance moves typically take up to 10 business days from 1-800-PACK-RAT facility to 1-800-PACK-RAT facility if the distance is less than 1,500 miles, or 10-14 business days if the distance is greater than 1,500 miles. Expedited services are available upon request. Also, if your shipping schedule is more flexible due to potential storage, we offer a flexible transportation option which may reduce your overall shipping costs.

May I drill into container floor support hooks to tie down items?

No. We take pride in the integrity of our containers and do our best to ensure they remain in top condition so they can properly protect our customers' contents. Any deliberate alteration of container integrity will negate your contents protection and container damage waiver, and you will be subject to compensatory charges for any damages resulting from such action. Our containers allow for supplemental stabilization of contents by utilizing the side wall slats to tie support material (rope, bungee cords, etc.) around the slats and contents. Our hydraulic lift system and air ride suspension fleet removes much of the traditional risk of contents shifting during transit. 

May I transport a car, motorcycle, rider lawn mower, or other motorized vehicles in the container?

We can help you transport all of these items! If you would like to transport a motorcycle, rider lawn mower or other motorized vehicles in your container, please be advised that it will nullify your Contents Protection Plan

 

If you'd like to transport your car, truck or motorcycle separately, we have you covered! 1-800-PACK-RAT has partnered with two third-party car shipping service providers you can work with to transport your vehicle(s) to your new home, without the wear and tear of having to drive them long-distance!

 

What if I’m not happy with the service?

Where can I buy boxes and moving supplies?

If you need boxes or moving supplies, we can help! To make your move as simple as possible, we now offer a variety of moving supplies you can purchase that will be shipped right to your door. We have everything from custom moving kits to boxes, moving blankets, mattress bags, and much more! Just place an order for what you need and your items will be shipped directly to you; it is that simple!

What is My PackRat?

My PackRat is a self-service management tool that allows you to manage your moving and storage account online. It enables you to make changes to your account such as updating contact or billing information and scheduling pick-up and drop-off dates online.

How do I get started with My PackRat?

When you place an order, a My PackRat account will automatically be set up for you. You will receive an email with your username and a temporary password. To access your account, visit 1800packrat.com and click My PackRat from the upper right corner of the page. 

How do I update my contact information?

Sign into My PackRat and click on the “My Profile” tab and edit the fields you need to change. When done, click “Update”.

How can I make changes to my order?

Sign into My PackRat and select the order you wish to edit within "My Orders". Here you can update billing information, schedule transportation, and make a payment or update a credit card if you're a local move or storage customer.

How can I schedule a delivery or pickup of my container?

Sign into My PackRat and select the order you wish to edit within "My Orders". Click on “Schedule Transportation”. Under this tab, you will see where your container has gone and where it will be going. Click on “Schedule” next to the type of transportation you would like to schedule. Fill out the door position, driveway type, and obstacle boxes. When viewing the calendar, the green dates are available options. Select the green date that works best for your schedule and the click “Schedule”.

Can I make a payment in My PackRat?

Yes! If you are a local moving or storage customer, then you can make payments online. We are working on adding this feature for our long-distance moving customers, so be sure to check back soon!
