How to Stay Organized During Your Move

A young couple takes inventory of their moving boxesStaying organized during any move, big or small, can reduce the headaches associated with a move. While it is true that moving can throw even the most organized person into a tailspin, having a plan can reduce the number of stress-inducing incidents along the way. Take a look at our favorite tips for staying organized throughout your upcoming move.

1) Create a detailed plan. Seeing a clear outline of your completed and uncompleted tasks will help you stay more organized and, therefore, less stressed. A defined plan can also prevent you from overlooking any of the finer details. Utilize a moving checklist to stay on track for your move. There will be things you won't think of until it is too late, so try using a checklist to stay on top of all of your moving tasks. Finally, always give yourself sufficient time to devote to each task on your list. The more you leave at the last minute, the more stress you’ll inevitably feel.

2) Put in the hard work of purging and decluttering before you start packing. It is mentally and physically exhausting to purge your belongings, but it is the number one way to uncomplicate your move. The first on the list to let go of is broken items, clothes you haven’t worn in the last year, kitchen appliances you’ve never touched, books you’re not going to read again, etc. Don’t make more work and stress for yourself by moving unnecessary items.

3) When trying to maintain a certain degree of organization during a move, there is no such thing as too many labels. As you pack, label each side of the box so the contents can be easily identified, even if boxes are stacked. Another option is to mark all sides of the box with a number corresponding to a handwritten or electronic inventory list. Creating an inventory list gives you more room to describe the contents in detail and assign a priority level to the box. The priority level quickly identifies which boxes should be loaded last and unpacked first. A detailed moving inventory list can be a tedious process, but it can be a lifesaver if some of your belongings are misplaced during a move.

4) Place important documents into a locked box or briefcase and transport them with you personally. For example, birth certificates, social security information, passports, wills, tax returns, financial statements, health insurance, medical records, employment documents, mortgage or rental contracts, moving documents, and other personal documents should stay with you throughout your move. Other items like medications, jewelry, personal electronics, keys, cash, and other valuables should also make the move with you personally.

5) Lean on your family and friends when you feel overwhelmed with the moving tasks ahead. Those close to you can lend a hand in many different ways to keep your move organized.
