The Spring season may have already started, but it is still a great time to get your spring-cleaning checklist ready and decide what you will tackle this year. We have six tips and tricks to help you with your 2021 spring cleaning list.
Tip #1: Clear the clutter before you start deep-cleaning. It is good to purge the unused and unwanted items from our homes occasionally. Stuff can pile up fast, and it is hard to clean when there is a lot of clutter everywhere.
Tip #2: If you find spring cleaning to be overwhelming, spread it out over a few weekends. Sit down with your family and make a plan that fits your schedule. You can create small zones in your home that you tackle each weekend or assign certain areas and tasks to each family member.
Tip #3: Make sure you have everything you will need before you get started. Pull out all your cleaning supplies and solutions. Dispose of anything that is no longer good or useful. Make sure you have plenty of cleaning rags and towels, gloves, and anything else you may need. If you are out of cleaning rags, old cotton t-shirts do a great job!
Tip #4: If you don’t want to use chemical cleaners, you can create your own. Pinterest is a great resource for DIY cleaning solutions (check out our Cleaning Hacks, Tricks, and Tips board here). One of our favorite DIY all-purpose cleaning solutions can be made by mixing ¾ cup peroxide, 2 cups water, ½ cup distilled white vinegar, and 1 tsp castile soap. If you have it on hand, you can add ten drops of tea tree oil and 20 drops of lavender oil. Shake the solution in a spray bottle, and you can use it for most of your general cleaning. Don’t forget always to test new cleaners on a small area first. Not every cleaner can be used on every surface. For instance, vinegar solutions should never be used on marble, aluminum, waxed surfaces, or cast iron. A quick Google search for your specific surfaces is always a good idea.
Tip #5: When you are done making your homemade cleaning solution, don’t put the vinegar up just yet. You can use the versatile liquid to clean most of the appliances in your home. You can run vinegar through your dishwasher, washing machine, tea kettle, coffee machine, drains, and garbage disposal to freshen them up. You may need a couple of bottles of this helpful, albeit smelly, stuff!
Tip #6: Don’t forget to clean some of the rarely thought about items in your home. You should disinfect and wipe down some of the things that get neglected for most of the year: all your remotes, door handles, cabinet pulls, trash can (inside and out), knife block, the panels on your appliances, and handrails.
